What did you think?

My question this month is a simple one. What did you think of the Lightning Thief? What was your favorite part? Least favorite part? That's it! Easy Peasy

  1. I hope I don't get confused with Sea of Monsters, which I grabbed from the library last week, but my favorite part is when he first realizes his power in the water. I love when you first find a talent you didn't know you had, (okay, his is more of a freaky talent, but still) it makes you feel amazing. This book made me want to go back and listen when I was learning about the greek gods and goddesses. My least favorite part? I think when he was in the amusement park with all the spider machines. It made me get the creepy crawleys. Just made me shiver again. I can't wait to get back to the library and start on book three!

  4. I hate to be the party pooper of the group, but I really did not like this book. I just didn't think that it was good writing. It felt like the "paint by numbers" of juvenile fiction. I mean, pre-teen kid who isn't wanted at home, and doesn't fit in at school all of a sudden finds out he's an important member of a magical world, and sets off with two sidekicks to save the world.....been there done that. Also, it felt really disjointed to me. I felt like I was on the Wild Mouse ride at Lagoon, (you know the one that gives you whiplash?) it was action scene, nothing, hurry to another action scene. And the action scenes were kind of too weird for me. They didn't really believably fit into the real world for me. And the fact that he has like 21 days to get the job done, and ends up having to do it all in one day, because he wasted a bunch of time, and it works out.....also not believable.
The one thing I did like was how the author fit the half-god children into the real world. Making ADHD and dyslexia, two common embarrassing problems for kids today, and makes them sort of like super powers....that's cool. Also, I like that the author is trying to bring mythology out to be exciting to people.
Anyway....that's my two cents, take it or leave it.

  5. So, I loved this book! It was one of the best books I have read in a long time. I do agree with Katers in that in the back of my mind, I thought, this is kind of familiar...but I didn't care. I loved the mythology, and I actually learned a lot about mythology while I was reading it. I also thought it was so funny. I was laughing out loud, and I can't remember the last book that made me do that.

My favorite part had to have been the content page...I know it sounds silly, but the titles of his chapters made me giggle. Thanks for the great suggestion! I am already into the second book!

  6. I never was able to get a copy of the book. My hubby even tried BYU library, no go. I guess I'll have to wait for next month to read from the next book selection.

  7. Okay, I know it looks like I'm late reading the book, but I promise I finished it before last week! ;-) I'm just slooow at posting. In fact, as I was reading, I was very aware of the June 21st deadline, and felt I was racing the time frame as well!
I'm really glad I read this book! It's been floating around my classroom throughout the year with my students, and my brother-in-law had read it previously as well.
I thought Percy's genealogy was predictable very early during his time at camp. In fact, as soon as I had my suspicions, I looked at the front cover again.... DUH!!! Yea, I felt a little slow then. However, I enjoyed the characters very much. The description of Hades was quite unique and spectacular, I thought. I definitely want to read more of the series.
I'm with most of you in that I was trying to remember my mythology and such throughout the book, and love the connection with ADHD and dyslexia...totally helps it be a recommendation for my students. As for the chapter's names...Shay you have a friend in me! I was giggling every time I came to a new chapter. "Oh, how is this going to play??" Percy's voice (or the author's voice) had a lot of personality to it, and I definitely saw my 5th graders in his attitudes. So, chalk this title in the win column for me! Onward to the next book!
